Description

YInMn Blue is a modern synthetic mineral pigment composed of yttrium (Y), indium (In), manganese (Mn), and oxygen (O). Discovered accidentally in 2009 by researchers at Oregon State University, YInMn Blue is celebrated for its extraordinary vibrancy, exceptional lightfastness, and remarkable stability across a wide range of mediums. It presents a rich, highly saturated blue with a subtle violet undertone and a crystalline, almost electric brightness unmatched by traditional blues.

In watercolor, YInMn Blue produces vivid, clean washes with strong opacity and minimal granulation. In egg tempera, oil, and acrylic painting, it offers dense, striking coverage and retains its luminosity even when mixed with other pigments. YInMn Blue is highly valued by artists seeking a brilliant, long-lasting blue that does not fade, darken, or react chemically with other materials.

History

YInMn Blue, often affectionately called "Mas Blue" after its lead researcher, Mas Subramanian, represents the first new stable blue pigment discovered in over 200 years, following the creation of synthetic ultramarine and cobalt blue. Its accidental discovery while researching materials for electronics highlighted the ongoing possibilities for pigment innovation even in the modern era.

Because of its exceptional chemical stability, nontoxic composition, and incredible brilliance, YInMn Blue was quickly adopted by artists, architects, and manufacturers seeking highly durable and environmentally safe alternatives to older pigments. Although initially rare and expensive due to the cost of indium, its availability has gradually expanded to professional and fine art markets.

Today, YInMn Blue stands as a modern heir to the ancient tradition of pigment making, combining the beauty of historical blues with the best of modern material science.
