Description
Vine Black is our exquisitely hand-crafted watercolor paint made with an extremely concentrated and high quality single source pigment mixed only with pure honey. Every pan is meticulously hand mulled, hand packed, filled, and labeled — ensuring maximum pigment concentration without any binders, fillers, or extenders. Our unique formula uses only one pigment and pure local honey, delivering a maximally concentrated watercolor paint.

Vine Black is a soft, cool black watercolor pigment made by charring grapevine twigs in a low-oxygen environment—a technique that dates back to antiquity and was favored by artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century. Unlike deeper, denser blacks like Bone Black or Lamp Black, Vine Black offers a delicate, smoky texture with low tinting strength and a transparent, bluish undertone.

Its gentle character makes it ideal for atmospheric washes, sketching, botanical work, underpainting, and subtle shadows. Vine Black lifts easily and layers beautifully without overpowering other colors, making it a favorite for naturalists, landscape artists, and classical figure painters who appreciate tonal nuance and historical materials.
