Description

Manganese Red (PR231) is a handmade single-pigment manganese alumina red corundum pigment. Built on a corundum crystal structure doped with manganese, it forms an extremely stable, mineral matrix. It produces a soft, medium red with a slightly violet-leaning undertone and a gently saturated masstone. Compared to organic reds and quinacridones, this pigment feels more mineral and understated, offering a natural, stone-like red that remains refined rather than candy-bright.

In use, Manganese Red gives a delicate yet dependable red ideal for florals, skies, portrait work, textiles, and subtle impasto in both landscape and figurative painting. It has moderate tinting strength and a semi-opaque character, allowing it to build smoothly from light veils of color to more solid passages without becoming chalky. It mixes beautifully with yellows for peaches and corals, with violets and magentas for nuanced rose and mauve tones, and with earth pigments for sophisticated, muted skin tones and gentle, cool neutrals.

This corundum-based pigment is chemically inert, heat-resistant, and highly resistant to acids and alkalis, which makes it suitable across a wide range of binders and mediums. In artist’s colors it offers a quiet, mineral red that can function as a primary soft red on the palette, a subtle alternative to high-chroma organic quinacridones, or a mixer for palettes that favor nuance, atmosphere, and tonal control.

History

Manganese alumina red corundum pigments were developed in the 20th century as part of the broader expansion of ceramic and industrial pigments. By incorporating manganese into an alumina-based corundum structure and firing at high temperatures, chemists created a stable pink pigment that could withstand demanding kiln conditions and harsh environments without fading or shifting color.

Originally designed for use in porcelain, enamels, and high-performance coatings, this manganese red was valued for its medium hue, excellent lightfastness, and durability in both interior and exterior applications. As interest in mineral-based, highly permanent pigments grew among artists, Manganese Red (PR231) began to appear in select artist ranges and handmade colors as a technical, modern alternative to more fugitive or overly intense pinks. Today it is appreciated by painters who want a stable, mineral red with a subtle, sophisticated character and reliable performance in the studio.
