Description
Madder Medium is our exquisitely hand crafted oil paint made with an extremely concentrated, high quality single source pigment. Every tube is meticulously hand mulled, filled, and labeled, using pure cold pressed walnut oil (linseed oil available upon request), less than 1% fumed silica as a stabilizer, and food grade lecithin as a natural wetting agent. Every paint is single pigment with maximum concentration and no fillers or extenders.
Madder Lake Medium is a luminous, rose red oil paint made from real fermented madder root (Rubia tinctorum), carefully laked using traditional dye extraction methods. This botanical pigment captures the delicate middle notes of madder's chromatic range, yielding a fresh, pink leaning crimson with gentle warmth and exceptional transparency. Historically favored in Renaissance portraiture and botanical illustration, this lighter variant of madder offers refined elegance, making it perfect for skin tones, florals, and luminous glazes.
Unlike synthetic alizarin, Madder Lake Medium reveals a subtle complexity when layered, shifting from coral rose to glowing ruby depending on dilution. Its soft granulation and fluid handling make it ideal for artists who value the beauty of natural dyes and the heritage of plant based color.
