Description
Madder Lake Light is our exquisitely hand-crafted watercolor paint made with an extremely concentrated and high quality single source pigment mixed only with pure honey. Every pan is meticulously hand mulled, hand packed, filled, and labeled — ensuring maximum pigment concentration without any binders, fillers, or extenders. Our unique formula uses only one pigment and pure local honey, delivering a maximally concentrated watercolor paint.

Madder Lake Light is a luminous, rosy-red watercolor made from real fermented madder root (Rubia tinctorum), carefully laked using traditional dye extraction methods. This botanical pigment captures the delicate top notes of madder’s chromatic range—yielding a fresh, pink-leaning crimson with gentle warmth and exceptional transparency. Historically favored in Renaissance portraiture and botanical illustration, this lighter variant of madder offers refined elegance, making it perfect for skin tones, florals, and luminous glazes.

Unlike synthetic alizarin, Madder Lake Light reveals a subtle complexity when layered, shifting from coral rose to glowing ruby depending on dilution. Its soft granulation and fluid handling make it ideal for artists who value the beauty of natural dyes and the heritage of plant-based color.
