Description

Lac Lake Magenta is our exquisitely hand-crafted watercolor paint made with an extremely concentrated, high-quality single source pigment. Every pan is meticulously hand mulled, filled, and labeled, using only pure local honey and all natural gum arabic to achieve an exceptionally concentrated and richly textured pigment. Every paint is single pigment with maximum concentration and no binders, fillers, or extenders.

Lac Lake is a rich, crimson-purple watercolor made from the resinous secretions of the lac insect (Kerria lacca), traditionally harvested in India and Southeast Asia. This precious dye, known for its depth and complexity, has been used since ancient times in textiles, illuminated manuscripts, and ceremonial art. When laked with alum, it produces a vivid, transparent purple with warm magenta undertones and luminous layering properties.

Our Lac Lake is handcrafted using traditional dye extraction and precipitation methods, honoring centuries of color craft. Its glowing clarity and fluid handling make it perfect for florals, portraiture, sacred art, and historical reproduction. The color ranges from soft violet rose to deep imperial purple in layered washes. An alternative to Tyrian Purple, this insect-derived lake has royal heritage and painterly grace.
