Description

Cobalt Violet Light is a delicate, semi-transparent violet pigment made from cobalt phosphate (Co₃(PO₄)₂). It produces a gentle, pastel-like violet leaning toward lilac or lavender, with a soft granulating texture in watercolor and smooth, luminous transparency in oils and acrylics.

Compared to darker cobalt violets (based on arsenates, PV14:1), the “light” variety is paler, cooler, and airier in tone. It is prized for glazing, atmospheric effects, floral painting, and subtle mixing, where its low tinting strength allows nuanced layering without overwhelming other colors.

History

Cobalt violets were first introduced in the mid-19th century, providing a permanent alternative to the highly fugitive organic violets and purples (like alizarin crimson mixed with ultramarine). Early versions were cobalt arsenates, beautiful but highly toxic.

By the late 19th century, cobalt phosphate was developed as a safer, more stable formulation. Marketed as Cobalt Violet Light, it became a specialty pigment favored by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters who needed permanent violets for flowers, skies, and delicate highlights.

Though expensive and weaker in tinting strength than many modern synthetics, it remains a favorite for artists seeking subtlety, historical authenticity, and lightfast permanence.
