Description

Cobalt Black (PBk27) is a handmade single-pigment iron cobalt chromite black spinel pigment. Built on a complex spinel structure of cobalt, iron, and chromium oxides, it forms an exceptionally stable crystalline matrix. It produces a deep, cool black with a subtle mineral character that is more stone-like and atmospheric than carbon blacks, with a rich, velvety masstone and quiet, neutral undertone.

In use, Cobalt Black gives a controlled, elegant black ideal for dense shadows, night scenes, metal and stone, ink-like line work, and atmospheric glazing. It has strong tinting strength without the harsh, overpowering density of lamp or ivory black, making it easier to nudge colors darker or cooler without losing chroma. It mixes beautifully with blues for stormy neutrals, with earths for sophisticated charcoal grays, and with reds and violets for complex, smoky mauves and shadow tones that stay refined rather than muddy.

This spinel pigment is chemically inert, heat-resistant, and highly resistant to acids and alkalis, which makes it suitable across a wide range of binders and mediums. In artist's colors it offers a restrained, mineral black that can serve as a primary neutral on the palette, a subtle alternative to carbon-based blacks, or a quiet mixer for palettes that favor atmosphere and tonal control.

History

Iron cobalt chromite blacks were developed in the 20th century as part of a broader family of ceramic and industrial pigments engineered to withstand high firing temperatures and demanding service conditions. By calcining cobalt, iron, and chromium oxides together at elevated temperatures, chemists created a stable black spinel with excellent weathering resistance, chemical durability, and long-term color stability.

Initially designed for enamels, ceramics, architectural coatings, and industrial finishes, this cobalt chromite black was valued for its neutral tone, opacity, and resistance to fading under harsh outdoor exposure. As interest in mineral-based blacks grew among artists, Cobalt Black (PBk27) began to appear in specialist paint lines and handmade watercolors as a technical, modern alternative to traditional carbon blacks.
