Description
Burnt Plate Walnut Oil is a specially polymerized form of our cold-pressed walnut oil, gently heated to encourage partial cross-linking (“standing”) and then cooled to yield a high-viscosity, glossy binder. Though it looks dark, it retains the clarity and low-yellowing characteristics of raw walnut oil, this stand-oil–style medium offers exceptional leveling, richer gloss, and extended working time—perfect for glazing, fine detail, and impasto in both oil painting and encaustic techniques. Recommended for use with shades or darker colors for a rich viscosity unlike any other medium.
Key Features
Polymerized for Gloss & Flow: Heat-induced partial curing increases viscosity and produces a self-levelling, high-sheen film.
Low Yellowing Index: Maintains the pale golden tone of walnut oil with minimal darkening over decades.
Extended Open Time: Slower drying (24–48 hr to touch dry) allows for smooth wet-into-wet blending and precise layering.
Superior Film Strength: The lightly “stood” oil forms a more elastic, crack-resistant film than raw walnut oil.
Archival Stability: Natural antioxidants retained during low-temperature pressing guard against oxidation and rancidity.
