Description

Chrome Alumina Pink (PR235) is a handmade single-pigment chrome alumina pink spinel pigment. Built on a spinel crystal structure of aluminum and chromium oxides, it forms an extremely stable mineral matrix. It produces a soft, warm pink with a gentle rose undertone and a moderately saturated masstone. Compared to high-chroma organic pinks, this pigment feels more mineral and understated, offering a refined, stone-like pink rather than an overly bright or candy-colored tone.

In use, Chrome Alumina Pink gives a controlled, elegant pink ideal for florals, portrait work, textiles, ceramic surfaces, and subtle glazes in both landscape and figurative painting. It has moderate tinting strength and a semi-opaque character, allowing it to build smoothly from delicate veils of color to more solid passages without becoming chalky. It mixes beautifully with yellows for soft peaches and light corals, with reds and violets for nuanced roses and mauves, and with earth pigments for naturalistic skin tones and quiet, warm neutrals.

This spinel pigment is chemically inert, heat-resistant, and highly resistant to acids and alkalis, which makes it suitable across a wide range of binders and mediums. In artist’s colors it offers a gentle, mineral pink that can function as a primary soft pink on the palette, a subtle alternative to intense organic roses, or a mixer for palettes that favor nuance, atmosphere, and tonal control.

History

Chrome alumina spinel pigments were developed within the ceramic and industrial color industries as stable, high-temperature stains for porcelain, tile, and glazes. By incorporating chromium into an alumina-based spinel matrix and firing at high temperatures, chemists created pinks and rose tones that could survive demanding kiln conditions without graying, burning out, or shifting in hue.

Originally formulated to lend a soft rose-pink color to ceramics and architectural finishes, Chrome Alumina Pink (PR235) was prized for its gentle hue, excellent lightfastness, and durability in both interior and exterior applications. As interest in mineral, ceramic-origin pigments grew among artists, Chrome Alumina Pink Spinel began to appear in select artist ranges and handmade colors as a technical, modern alternative to more fugitive or overly intense pinks. Today it is appreciated by painters who want a stable, mineral pink with a quiet, sophisticated character and a long record of reliability.
